Stretching Before and After Workouts

Stretching before and after workouts lowers risk of injury by allowing the muscles to loosen up, and providing improved flexibility.

Difference Between Warmups and Stretching

The purpose of stretching is to improve joint range of motion and flexibility, drastically reducing any risk of injury from the subsequent workout. Additionally, stretching one area can reduce chances of pain in others—for example, increasing flexibility in the hamstring area can lower the chance of back pain. Warmups, however, are intended to boost your heart rate and increase blood flow throughout the body.

Stretching can serve as a warmup, provided it is dynamic rather than static stretching. When stretching to warm up, you should be using dynamic stretches, such as twisting lunges, rather than holding one stretching position with little to no movement.

Static stretching is most effective after a workout because your muscles will be completely relaxed, this will cause the muscles to stretch easier due to the fact that there is a high degree of plasticity in the body.
