How to Correct Poor Posture
How do I know if I have poor posture?
Poor posture is one of the most common causes of back pain, especially as we get older. Poor posture can be defined as the spine being positioned in uncomfortable positions or in such ways that will cause stress to vital muscles and vertebrae. This would include slouching, having rounded shoulders, tilting your head forward and overly bending your knees. If this type of neglectful behaviour is carried out over a long period of time, you may experience back pain that is difficult to treat.
Why do I have poor posture?
Sometimes, it can be inevitable to develop poor posture and often times it is ones own fault. Someone may have poor posture due to the lifestyle that they were born into; a sedentary lifestyle where little to no physical activity seemed to be essential or a part of your daily routine. This can result in someone being unaware of how to correct or maintain good posture for the benefit of the future. In certain situations, the occupation that you obtain may have an effect on your posture, sitting at a desk may be uncomfortable after long hours and overtime, it is natural to slouch out of habit or to feel comfortable. However, if this is the case for you, it is recommended that you invest in a proper chair, back support devices and practice better posture outside of work as well.
How to treat poor posture
The most common and effective way to treat poor posture is to pay a visit to a physiotherapist. A physiotherapist is able to assess the cause and diagnose postural habits. Further, they will provide corrective exercises and movements to improve flexibility, strength and posture.
