Incorporating Stretching into the Work Day
As workplaces begin to re-open, some of us may be headed back to work and offices. Even if we aren’t returning to a physical office, many of us have been working at home. Sitting in one space or staring at a screen for an extended period of time can be hard on your body as well as on your mind. A great way to break up periods of sitting or working is to incorporate stretching breaks into your day.
Taking a break to stretch and move isn’t just good for your body but can also be great for your mind. Stepping away from your workstation can help to release some of the stress that may be associated with the work you are doing. When you return you may come back with a clear mind and feeling refreshed.
Stretching also allows us to reconnect to our breath. This activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which can help us to relax and reduce our stress response.
Adding in an element of routine to your stretching can help to ensure that no workday goes by where you realize you haven’t moved all day. You can add stretching on to your lunch break time, or after a bathroom break. Even setting an alarm or reminder on your phone can help make stretching a habit that sticks in your schedule.
While you may not be able to perform a full sun salutation at work, there are outside the box ways to bring stretching in. Just standing up and taking a moment to roll your shoulders and neck can bring a much-needed stretch to your day. Stretching while you are sitting at your desk can include rolling your wrists or ankles or twisting towards the back of your chair to stretch out your spine.
