Achilles Pain and Achilles Tendinopathy

Achilles tendinopathy is a condition of the Achilles tendon that can cause pain, swelling and stiffness. The Achilles tendon is the band of tissue that joins the heel bone to the calf muscles. Achilles tendinopathy occurs when there are repeated small injuries to the Achilles tendon. The tendon is not able to completely heal after the small injuries, and that leads to damage building up. Once the damage has built up within the Achilles, that is when Achilles tendinopathy can occur.

Causes

Many things can lead to repeated small injuries of the Achilles tendon. The tendon may be overused, which is common for people who run regularly or are involved in sports that require jumping. Wearing the inappropriate footwear can also lead to small injuries occurring repeatedly. Having poor technique or making a sudden or dramatic change to your training routine can also lead to Achilles tendinopathy.

As we age, our tendons become weaker, making us more susceptible to injury and also therefore to Achilles tendinopathy. People who have certain types of arthritis, like ankylosing spondylitis or psoriatic arthritis, tend to be more vulnerable to Achilles tendinopathy Certain medications from the family of fluoroquinolones can also increase the risk of developing Achilles tendinopathy.

Symptoms and Treatment

Pain and stiffness are the main symptoms of Achilles tendinopathy, specifically in and around the Achilles tendon. The pain tends to develop gradually and is often stated to be the worst first thing in the morning and after exercise. It can start to impact your daily routines and performing everyday activities, and sometimes swelling of the area can be noticed.

Physiotherapy at FLXME can help Achilles tendinopathy. Our physiotherapist can work with you to develop a treatment plan, to target the pain and to help the Achilles heal.
