Why We Need to Stretch
Stretching can provide many benefits for the body, that go beyond just increasing flexibility. Shape.com released an article highlighting several reasons why we should stretch.
1. It can improve posture and Confidence
Stretching can help to align the spine and build mobility within it so that holding proper posture is easier. It can also help to minimize the aches and pains that can be felt in the back. The way we hold ourselves can have such an impact on the way we approach life and different situations, that when our posture improves often our confidence improves with it.
2. Better Blood Flow
Stretching helps to increase blood flow and circulation. It can also help to get oxygen to the brain to help attain a clearer mind, according to Peggy Hall, a wellness expert.
3. Good for the Glutes
Sitting puts a lot of strain on your glutes. In the article 6 Reasons You Need to Stretch on Shape.com, Sandra Hahamian, a certified personal trainer, said “When you’re sitting, the nerves that activate your glutes can shut down in a very short period of time”. The article further described how sitting can cause the glute muscles to atrophy and begin to degenerate. Stretching helps to keep the glutes active and wake up the muscles.
4. Good for the Thoracic Spine
The thoracic spine is located in the middle of the back. If you sit still a lot during the day, rotational stretches are particularly important in maintaining the health of the thoracic spine. Sandra Hahamian explained how if the thoracic spine becomes tight it can cause a chain of problems throughout the body, causing pain and discomfort.
5. Better Balance
If muscles get tight it can cause pain and can cause balance issues. Stretching can help alleviate the tightness and help the body feel more balanced. Increase mobility due to stretching also helps ensure that balance is maintained even in the more unstable positions and conditions.
6. Improve your workout game
After exercising often muscles feel tight. By incorporating stretching, this tightness can be alleviated, and the muscles that were trained can be stretched out to feel less tense.
As always, it is important to maintain stretching technique. Ensuring that you modify the stretch to meet your needs, holding the stretch at the point of resistance, and maintaining your breathing. Shape also emphasises the need to change our mental soundtrack as well. Instead of associating negative thoughts and feelings with stretching, replace the soundtrack with positive thoughts like “this is what my body needs” and “I’m getting more flexible each time I stretch”.
Assisted stretching can help work stretching into your routine, but also help take your mind off of the stretch and create a more positive stretching experience all while stretching safely.
